Reasons Why Fine Jewelry Deserves Protection
Receiving a custom-made piece is a milestone. Months of planning, selecting the perfect gemstone, refining every detail, and painstaking handcrafting culminate in a piece that is uniquely yours.
It is also the moment when responsibility for protecting that piece passes from us to you. Many clients spend considerable time choosing the right diamond, gemstone, or design but give little thought to insurance. Yet insuring fine jewelry is one of the simplest and least expensive ways to protect a valuable asset. We strongly recommend arranging insurance as soon as your jewelry is completed and delivered.
Why Jewelry Insurance Matters
Fine jewelry faces risks unrelated to craftsmanship. A ring can slip off during travel. An earring can disappear during a vacation. A bracelet can be stolen, damaged, or lost without any clear explanation. Most homeowners and renters insurance policies provide only limited coverage for jewelry and often exclude common causes of loss. Specialized jewelry insurance typically offers broader protection, including loss, theft, damage, mysterious disappearance, and worldwide travel coverage. For a bespoke piece that may take months to recreate, proper insurance is not merely a financial consideration; it is peace of mind.
When Should You Buy Insurance?
The best time to insure jewelry is immediately after taking possession of it. Most jewelry insurance providers recommend obtaining coverage as soon as the item is delivered, even if it will later return to the jeweler for sizing or adjustments. Coverage often begins the same day the policy is approved. Waiting until after a loss is, of course, too late.
What Documents Will You Need?
Obtaining insurance is usually straightforward. Most insurers accept a copy of the invoice. However, they may also request a recent appraisal, a GIA report, and sometimes photographs of the piece. For diamonds, a GIA grading report is generally preferred because it independently describes the stone’s characteristics. We provide the in-house appraisal free of charge (on request). You will also receive from us the original invoice and the gem lab certificate(s). An appraisal is a detailed document that describes the piece and estimates its retail replacement value.
We suggest keeping the documentation complete; it will be easier to establish value and process a claim if one ever becomes necessary. Insurance companies use this document to determine coverage amounts and premiums. Accurate appraisals help avoid both over-insuring and under-insuring a piece. For valuable jewelry, review appraisals periodically because gemstone and precious metal prices can change over time. Many insurers recommend updates approximately every two years.
How Much Does Jewelry Insurance Cost?
The premium depends on the appraised value of the piece and varies by insurer. Specialized jewelry insurance typically costs about 1–2% of the jewelry’s insured value per year, though premiums vary by location, deductible, and the nature of the piece.

What Happens If You Need to File a Claim?
The claims process generally follows a simple path:
- Report the loss, theft, or damage
- Provide supporting documentation
- Select a jeweler to perform the repair or replacement
- The insurer works directly with the jeweler to restore or recreate the piece.
Unlike standard property claims, specialized jewelry insurers often work directly with the client’s chosen jeweler to repair or replace the item with one of similar quality and craftsmanship. For a custom-made piece, this distinction can matter a great deal.
Protecting More Than Monetary Value
A Leon Mege jewel is not a commodity purchased from a display case. It results from collaboration, craftsmanship, and countless hours of skilled labor. Insurance cannot replace sentimental value. It cannot recreate the proposal, anniversary, or family memory attached to a piece. What it can do is ensure that if the unexpected happens, you have the means to restore what was lost. A custom jewel is designed to become an heirloom. Proper insurance helps ensure that its story continues for generations.
